Regular vent cleanings and machine maintenance are important for keeping your dryer operating efficiently and safely. Left unattended, a clogged dryer vent can lead to a variety of issues and potential hazards. Review these four signs that it's time to clean your dryer vent.
Poor Performance
One of the most noticeable signs of a clogged dryer vent is poor machine performance. Typically, a normal load of laundry should only take 35 to 40 minutes to dry. If your vent is clogged, you may notice that clothes aren't completely dry after a finished drying cycle, or that they emit an unpleasant, musty odor when they're finally dry.
Excessive Heat
When a dryer vent is clogged, it forces the machine to work overtime to get the job done. This often produces excessive heat, which is a major factor in dryer-related house fires. If your clothes come out of the dryer feeling noticeably hotter to the touch, or if you notice excessive heat in the room where the machine operates, it may be time to have your dryer vent inspected and/or professionally cleaned.
Lint Buildup
Dryer vent clogs are primarily caused by buildups of lint, which is highly flammable. One sign that your vent is clogged is unusually large amounts of lint collecting in your machine's lint trap or on your clothing. Lint may also build up around the dryer's lint filter or around the outside of the lint opening.
You Haven't Cleaned the Vent in a Year
Most household dryer vents should be checked and cleaned at least once a year. Machines that see more frequent or intensive use may need to be checked more often, however. If it's been a year or longer since you've had a
dryer vent cleaning, schedule one as soon as possible to prevent damage to your machine and dangerous accidents.
